BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It was a record-breaking Black Friday for outdoor outfitter Patagonia and that will translate into big donations to environmental groups.

The retailer pledged its profits from Black Friday to about 800 environmental groups around the world, including Burlington-based One Percent for the Planet. The organization connects businesses that want to give 1 percent of their profits to nonprofit groups working to improve the environment. The say governments alone can only do so much to improve the environment and there is an important role for the private sector to play.

"And that was a large part of Patagonia's effort on Black Friday was really heightening the awareness and commitment to the role of the private sector in driving impact for the environment. And we are really committed to that every day and work with our member companies all over the world to deliver on that," said Kate Williams, the CEO of One Percent for the Planet.

Since 2002, One Percent for the Planet says it has generated more than $150 million to support nonprofit partners around the world.
