New name official for Johnson and Lyndon State Colleges

Posted: Updated:

It's official: Johnson and Lyndon State Colleges have a new name. The Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees on Wednesday officially approved the name Northern Vermont University for the two campuses, which will merge by July 2018.

On campus at Johnson State Wednesday, reaction to the name change was mostly positive.

College officials admit there was no way to make everyone happy. They say the goal was to have each campus maintain its identity and sports teams. Lyndon State will be known as Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and Johnson State will be NVU-Johnson.

"The name is pretty good. I like it; it's what I voted for," said Kayla Flanagan, a sophomore.

"Has a nice ring to it. It also shows where we are as colleges, too, because if you say, 'I am from Johnson State,' no one really knows where that is," said Emma English, a junior.

"I think that Johnson feels like a college to me, opposed to a bigger university. I think that college is a more appropriate name for it," said Emily Peterson, a sophomore.

"I don't really have too much of a preference; it's good either way. I'll have to get a new sweatshirt," said Justin Cassidy, a transitioning student.

The name change has generated a lot of attention on social media, with a number of alumni saying they don't like the change.

College officials say the biggest piece of the naming puzzle was the switch to university status. They say it's not a guarantee for a boost in enrollment, but that it adds to overall prestige, especially with international students.

Castleton University underwent a similar rebranding last year.
