Could sale of Price Chopper mean lower prices?

Posted: Updated:

A popular grocery store chain may be bought out by its rival. Supermarket chain Albertsons is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Price Chopper.

Based in Iowa, Albertsons also owns the East Coast grocery chain, Shaw's.

With the two supermarkets having locations throughout the Northeast, it might not be a bad thing for consumers.

"For the consumer, ultimately it should mean lower prices because that is the key to survival in the retail grocery business. Retail groceries are faced with threats, most notable online," said Robert Letovsky, St. Michael's College professor.

With online delivery services like Amazon and big-box stores such as Wal-Mart gaining popularity, the regional supermarkets are struggling to compete.

The deal is not yet finalized, but it is expected to be a $1 billion sale.
