Pet safety during the holidays

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Those holiday decorations may be beautiful, but how safe are they for your pets?

Veterinarians say there are a few things to keep an eye out for.

For starters, decorations should be out of reach and tinsel is never a great idea for trees.

When it comes to food, keeping it on countertops and not at eye level is key. And there's always one particular food that vets find pets ingest around this time of year that can be deadly.

"Dogs will get into any chocolate you have. You put it on the table, you want people to have it. But chocolate is the biggest thing we see," said Dr. John Eustis of the Orchard Veterinary Hospital.

Vets recommend animal-proofing your home before big parties. Start with keeping your trash cans securely shut.
