How to stay safe swimming in Vt. waterways

Posted: Updated:
WATERBURY, Vt. -

The Vermont Department of Public Safety has issued a warning about potentially unsafe swimming.

Officials say conditions at popular swimming locations are constantly changing and heavy rain in the summer can cause waterways to rise and currents to increase.

"Swimming accidents can occur even when precautions are taken, so we urge Vermonters, and our visitors, to exercise caution, and not take anything for granted when venturing into or near the water," Public Safety Commissioner Tom Anderson said in a statement.

If you go swimming, the department urges you to:

  • Be vigilant about your surroundings
  • Beware of slippery rocks
  • Know the conditions
  • Swim sober
  • Be realistic about your abilities.

The warning comes after the drownings of a number of people in our region in the last few weeks.
