Vt. Guard soldiers could be deployed in 2019 or 2020

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont National Guard soldiers are preparing for a possible deployment in 2019 or 2020.

Vermont saw the largest call up since World War II in 2010, when 1,500 soldiers deployed to Afghanistan. Our troops became available for war again in 2015 but there was no call-up.

Now, with a potential troop surge on the horizon, Vermont could get the call again. If so the soldiers would go in about three years.

"I think there's a good possibility we'll need the 86th brigade in the next few years and we're going to be ready in case that call comes. The senior leaders in the Department of Defense are looking at that as these will be the most readily available forces that we need, maybe Afghanistan maybe other parts of the world, there are a lot of security challenges around the world. Our soldiers are going to be ready for that call if it comes," said Maj. Gen. Steven Cray, the commander of the Vermont National Guard.

In the meantime, our troops continue training.

You can hear more from Maj. Gen. Cray, including the latest on PTSD numbers from the last deployment and the F-35, this Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. on "You Can Quote Me."
