Monarchs Are Here!
It's a lovely time of year, the end of summer! It's mid August, and if you look carefully in any field that has milkweed in it, you can often find Monarch caterpillars that are about to go into the chrysalis stage.
There are also Monarch butterflies around, and it won't be long before they begin their long flight down to Mexico for the winter. You might see them congregating around a mud puddle, or on a roadside, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. When they do that, they are feeding on minerals, and salts that they can pick up from the soils there. They have a super long tongue, that works like a straw so they can suck up those nutrients.
Enjoy the Monarchs while they are here. It won't be long before they start moving out. As we move through September, we start seeing fewer and fewer of them as they leave before the cold weather hits here, for the balmy winter weather down south.
