This is arguably the best time of year for hiking! But let's face it, we're not all in good enough shape to race to the top of Mount Mansfield, and some of us have young children we'd like to bring along. Tonight, we begin our search for easy hiking trails with a big payoff. Ealge Mountain in Milton is our first hike.
For someone who grew up hiking with her family, Karen Bates was anxious to get back to it, along with her own young family. But, it meant finding trails that were easy enough for Amelia and Ian, and interesting enough to keep it fun for them. Eagle Mountain in Milton fits the bill perfectly.
"Really you have to think about what you are doing at that moment, and not wait until the top. Give them the excitement, they can't think ahead to that part."
So ....Make a point of focusing on the excursion up to the view as much as the destination. We found a toad along the side of the trail. The kids were thrilled!
Jennifer Karson of the Green Mountain Club explains why she loves this trail.
"I love this hike, because it's short, but you get alot of different experiences as your walking, because you are walking through woods, your walking through field, and you get to this location where you have this wonderful view. I love that its the kind of hike thats good for people of lots of different abileties, and a great way to introduce people to the hiking experience."
For Karen Bates, it's an opportunity to spend some quality time with her kids.
"They like being with us, ...and the snacks! But you know sometimes it's just hard to hang out and be together and talk. The dinnertime is sometimes stressful, it's the end of the day. But just walking around with your family, eventually you get to talk about little things, ...you get to be together. Really be together."
