More Food Recalls

Burlington, Vermont - October 2, 2007

From peanut butter to produce to meat, it can be difficult to keep track of all the food recalls hitting stores these days. 21.7 million pounds of ground beef, 8,000 cases of spinach, and more than 5,000 bags of lettuce have been recalled this year, and that's causing many people to ask, is our food really safe to eat? Health experts say more people are being sickened by contaminated food, partly due to the way food today is distributed. More food is currently being produced centrally and distributed to all parts of the U.S. than in the past. New strains of food bourne illnesses are constantly being discovered. On the positive side, testing capabilities have improved and so has food surveillance. Illnesses in different states can more quickly be linked together and contaminated food can immediately be removed from store shelves. Many health experts say the federal government needs to take extra measures to help protect our food, but admit that no matter what we do, our food will never totally be safe. That means uncertainty will remain on store shelves, and the recalls will likely continue.
