Plattsburgh on Target for Target

Plattsburgh, New York - January 29, 2008

Many of the people who work at Champlain Center Mall were surprised when they showed up for work Monday morning. The former Ames department store was demolished. It occupied the site where a new Target store will soon be built. It had been closed for about a decade and was no more than a shell.

"We took down the Ames building on Saturday so construction has started. Ames was just a shell. Target will be building their building right next to the mall," explains mall spokeswoman Joan LaPier.

There are no Target stores in Vermont or Quebec, Canada. The store has a good following. Shoppers like the idea of having one here.

"I think we need some other places to shop... A little competition for Wal-Mart and K-Mart. I'm looking forward to it," says shopper Deb Fuller.

"I think Target will bring some diversity to Plattsburgh. It will help draw some Canadian shoppers as well as some of our neighbors from outside Clinton County," says shopper Pat MacMannis.

Champlain Center Mall says the addition of a Target store is expected to draw even more cross-border shoppers, especially since there is no such store in Quebec. The mall did not indicate why the site was untouched for most of this past winter, except to say they were in negotiations.

Construction is expected to be finished this October with an opening in March of 2009.
