PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team knocked off top-ranked Middlebury, 3-0, on Tuesday night in a rematch of the past two NCAA Division III championship games before 1,052 at Stafford Ice Arena - the fourth-largest home crowd in team history. With the loss, the Panthers (16-2-2) had their 17-game unbeaten streak snapped, which was the longest in the nation.
The No. 2-ranked Cardinals established a number of accomplishments with their sixth win in a row: five consecutive shutouts to tie a school record; first shutout in the 14-game series between the schools; fifth 20-win season in a row (20-2); fifth-straight victory against Middlebury; extended a scoreless string over opponents to 306 minutes and 47 seconds; and pinned first shutout on a Panther team in 137 games.
Danielle Blanchard added another milestone when she opened the scoring midway through the game. She was credited with a game-winning goal - her nation-leading 22nd overall of the season -- to give her 17 for her career, tying the school record set by Elizabeth Gibson from 2001-05. Julie Devereux assisted on the nifty backhander that came at the 10:41 mark of the second period.
The Cardinals received some insurance tallies by Shay Bywater 7 minutes later and Claire O'Connor in the third period.
Middlebury netminder Lani Wright had 20 saves while Cardinals goalie Danielle Beattie stopped 23 shots for her sixth shutout of the season.
