Fort Myers, Fla. - In a training camp devoid of many newsworthy events, a routine Sunday morning turned into one of the big days of the spring. The Red Sox announcing the re-signing of their manager, Terry Francona.
"I think in a coule of days I'll never think about it again because we're going to be thinking about what's happening on Field 4," said Francona. "Today, I feel like the ballclub showed a lot of trust in me which I don't take lightly and I appreciate it. I'm honored and hopefully humbled.
"Took awhile," added GM Theo Epstein. "Typical negotiation. The agent for the manager started high. The organization started low and kind of met in the middle but I think the important thing there was always a recognition on our part Tito holds a certain status here and deserves to be compensated accordingly. On Tito's part this was the right right organization for him and the best place in the world to manage so when you have that kind of sentiment on both sides I think it's a natural that it gets done.
You manage a baseball team on two fronts. You manage onthe field and you manage in the clubhouse. And this is where Terry Francona excels. Is it something that comes natural to him?
"I hope so," says Tito. "I mean I hope treating people well does. I think that we try to treat everybody we come into contact with like they're special. I think the players have earned that right when they come into our clubhouse whether it's spring training or the season and if there's something to be said that isn't neccessarily complimentary we do it where we need to do it. "
Francona seemed ill at ease talking about negotiations. He was more than happy to leave the details to his rep Pat Rooney.
"I think I was probably a little naive going into it. I actually told Theo and the guys I'm not very comfortable doing this. So, the minute it started I wanted it to be over and it was just not practical that it would work like that. The last week I've been thinking about it."
