FAIRLEE, VT -- Trevor Murphy has his work cut out for him if Murphy plans on repeating as the Vermont Open champion.
St. Johnsbury's Murphy, who last year became the first Vermonter ever to win the Open, is tied for 20th, eight shots off the lead after posting a round of even par 70 Monday in the first round of the Vermont Open at the Lake Morey Country Club in Fairlee.
James Renner of Plainville, Massachusetts has the first round lead after firing an eight under 62, one stroke off the course record.
Murphy, the three time reigning Vermont Amateur champion, won the Open last year as an amateur. He returns having just recently turned pro.
The top Vermont finishers are Todd Trono, Brian Albertazzi and former Vermont Am champ Dustin Cone. They're tied for 10th at one under.
