ESSEX, VT -- After winning a pair of ABA titles in their first two seasons, the Vermont Frost Heaves are moving to a new league. The coach that led them to those championships will be along for the ride.
Cabot native Will Voigt announcing at a team press conference Tuesday that he will be back for another season as the Frost Heaves head coach.
"I spoke with several teams.", said Voigt. "I received a few offers but at the end of the day this is home for me and it's going to take a lot to get me to leave this state, to get me to leave what we've started here."
A two-time ABA Coach of the Year, Voigt led the Heaves to a 71-10 record and two ABA titles.
Voigt said that he has not officially signed a contract yet, but confirmed that he will lead the Heaves this season as they make their debut in the Premire Basketball League. The PBL figures to be a much more competitive league, and with no players currently under contract, Voigt knows he has his work cut out for him. That new challenge was one of the reasons Voigt decided to return.
"I think the biggest difference is top to bottom the overall level of the league. " said Voigt. "We're aware there were certain teams on our schedule last year that you could pencil us in for a win and probably at that point and in year 2 our fans knew who those teams were as well so I think they'll be some excitement coming with not only closer games but also some new teams."
