BURLINGTON, VT -- The UVM hockey season begins this weekend.
On Sunday, October 5th, the Vermont men's and women's hockey teams will both host McGill University in an exhibition doubleheader at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The men's game starts at 4pm, the women drop the puck at 7pm.
The men are coming off their first trip to the Hockey East championship game. The Cats lost just five seniors from that team, and all ten of their top scorers have returned.
"It almost seems like we're a month, month and a half ahead of last year.", says captain Dean Strong. "Just so much more experience, guys are confident. Guys know what's going on with our drills. It's been a lot easier of a transition with us this year."
"We will take those valuable experiences of playing in big games.", adds head coach Kevin Sneddon. "More or less taking the experience of going through a difficult first half, and what it really took to bring the team together and have a tremendous second half. We really want to start off on a good foot and be consistent. I think that's one of the the main goals of our program."
Experience is a main theme for the the UVM women's hockey team was well. Ten of their top eleven scorers and both goalies are back. After years of struggling, the Cats feel they're turned a corner.
"Following this program, it's kind of been looked at as the club team, or the easy team for the weekend, if we're against an opponent.", says captain Chelsea Furlani. "Now, I feel, we're building and getting a lot stronger."
"We're at a point now where we all feel a lot more confident and it's such a big thing for players to go on the ice, and feel like we just have to play well and do our jobs and we got a real legit chance to win and that's a real change for this program.", adds head coach Tim Bothwell.
