Gas prices drop below $2 a gallon

Associated Press - December 2, 2008 10:55 AM ET

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The average price at the pump has dropped below $2 a gallon in Vermont for the first time since 2005.

According to AAA's daily retail survey, the $1.98 price per gallon of gasoline is down from $2.75 in November and $3.12 a year ago.

But Vermont's $1.98 average is higher than the national average of $1.82.

Tom Williams, the Vermont manager for AAA of Northern New England, says the lower prices were likely driven by a drop in crude oil prices following a decrease in demand as the global economy slowed.

He says the last time gas prices fell below $2 in Vermont was on March 8, 2005.
