Visiting Appalachian Mountain Club Huts

January 15, 2009

Want to spend a night at an Appalachian Mountain Club hut in the White Mountains as featured in Destination Recreation: Mountain Huts?

Detailed information about the huts, including prices, availability, and information on what to bring can be found by clicking on the links below:

The Lonesome Lake Hut is one of eight huts in the system. Only three receive visitors during the winter months. The Lonesome Lake is the easiest to reach in winter and is best suited for families. The hike is 1.5 miles long and strenuous at times. Snowshoes or crampons are strongly recommended. For historical information about the Lonesome Lake Hut, check out the following link:

The hike to Lonesome Lake Hut begins in the Lafayette Campground off of Interstate 93 in Franconia Notch State Park, just south of the Cannon Mountain Ski Area.

The Carter Notch and Zealand Falls Huts are also open in winter. Zealand Falls is the only hut of the three that can easily be reached using skies. The other two are best suited for people on snowshoes and only by the most experienced back country skiers.
