Chelsea, Vermont - March 12, 2009

Kristy O'Meara, 33, of Wells River, told the court that if she could take back her actions she would. That came right before the judge handed down her sentence for gross negligent operation of a vehicle with death resulting.

"I remand you to the Commissioner of Corrections for a period of not less than 4 years nor more than 15 years and will require that 3 years be served," Vt. District Court Judge Mary Miles Teachout said.

On January 9, 2007, O'Meara crossed the center line on Route 5 in Newbury and slammed head-on into Christina Ellison, 31, of Haverhill, N.H. Ellison was pregnant and she and her unborn baby were killed.

Several of Ellison's family members testified at the sentencing hearing including her father, one of her two young sons, and several of her aunts.

"Chrissy was a daughter, a mother, a granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend, that you have taken from all of us," said Colleen O'Gara, Christina Ellison's aunt.

Kristy O'Meara has a degenerative back disorder that causes spasms and she claimed that was what caused the crash.

Since the 2007 crash, O'Meara has been pulled over several times for erratic driving and the judge said that played a part in the sentence. She called O'Meara "a menace."

Ellison's family members spoke with the press after the hearing.

Asked if she was satisfied with the sentence, Ellison's mother Delcia Vinnacombe said, "I am. This is justice for Chrissy and Taylor Rose."

O'Meara was immediately taken into custody after the hearing. Along with the four to 15 year sentence, she will not be allowed to operate a vehicle once she is released from jail.
