RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) - Some of you may have noticed a bump in your bank account. The federal government is distributing the second round of stimulus checks.

Of the people I spoke with, it was pretty evenly split between those waiting for that money and those who have already received it. And they all tell me they are doing the same thing with their checks.

“It will be a big help,” said Peter Laflamme of Rutland. “Because right now we are behind on all of our financial needs.”

Some people, like Laflamme, are still waiting for their checks.

“When it comes, anything will help towards some past stuff. We’re going to be paying a vet bill down that we have, so that will help. We have a lot of animals,” said Lindsay Laferriere of West Rutland.

The government began mailing paper checks last Wednesday, Dec. 30. Jan. 4 is the official payment date for direct deposits.

“You should be smart with the money because we aren’t out of the woods yet,” said Tracy Bruce of Brandon.

Bruce received her check Monday morning.

“It’s better to stock it away or pay bills. Most of mine will get stocked away,” she said.

“Catching up on my electric bill, which I put off. And just a few extra special things like coffee and a few Christmas presents I wasn’t able to get before,” said Cathie Lackard of Leicester.

Lackard got her money this weekend.

“If you’ve been behind, I really think that that would help you and then putting it into our economy again,” she said.

Back to Laflamme, who is still waiting on his, he’s grateful for the second round of checks.

“That made me feel happy that we’re getting some help because we actually really need it right now in this time,” he said. “I’m sure everybody else does, too.”

Now a reminder about who is eligible:

  • People who make $75,000 or less get $600.
  • Couples who file together receive $1,200 if their joint income is below $150,000.
  • People will get an additional $600 for each qualifying child 16 years old or younger.
