BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Efforts to bolster Vermont child care are getting a big boost from the private sector.

Montpelier-based National Life Group is donating $500,000 to Let’s Grow Kids, the insurance company’s biggest donation ever.

This is on top of a $50 million state investment to expand child care, a top priority because of the pandemic.

Experts say three out of every five Vermont children are not enrolled in a program. National Life’s donation will be used to grow the child care workforce through scholarships and tuition assistance.

“This is a significant need, and we believe by being an anchor-investor in Let’s Grow Kids -- in terms of the expansion of the organization -- we are starting a movement that will put us in a better position as a state,” said Mehran Assadi, National Life’s president and CEO.

National Life is also calling on other companies in Vermont to donate to child care.
