CHARLOTTE, Vt. (WCAX) - Authorities say a woman died while boating on Lake Champlain Thursday night.

The Vermont State Police say the woman and her companion, a man in his mid-70s, left from Point Bay Marina in Charlotte on a 29-foot sailboat operating under motor power. They say it appears the victim fell overboard at some point and drowned. An angler found the woman’s body Friday morning and the Coast Guard located the man alone on the boat. Police say he has Parkinson’s and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Police say they are investigating reports that people in the area heard a woman screaming for help. “Based off the information we have right now, nothing is indicating that anything suspicious took place. Obviously, it just looks like a tragedy at this point,” said VSP Sgt. Robert Lucas.

Police are withholding the victim’s name until relatives can be notified.
