Burlington suspends relationship with Russian sister city
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Burlington is suspending their relationship with their sister city, Yaroslavl, Russia.
Burlington’s Mayor Miro Weinberger announced the decision in response to Russia invading Ukraine and Gov. Phil Scott’s subsequent executive order on Thursday.
Burlington and Yaroslavl have spent the past 30 years exchanging cultures through things like student programs, visits, and art exchanges.
Leaders of the independent sister-city program say the relationship is between people, not governments. They say ending this relationship will just further isolate the people of Russia, many of whom don’t agree with the invasion.
Weinberger says he will be meeting with program leaders to discuss their concerns.
