SHELDON, Vt. (WCAX) - Crews in Sheldon fought stiff winds on Monday to keep a barn fire from jumping to two other structures.

A passerby spotted the blaze at the Shady Lane Farm in Sheldon at about 9:30 a.m.

When crews arrived, the roof was on fire.

Firefighters say the blaze started in the hay loft but there was no hay in the barn, it mainly served as storage and housed a few animals.

Several chickens were killed but a horse escaped the fire.

The barn is a total loss but firefighters were able to keep the flames from jumping to another barn and a house.

Route 105 was shut down between Route 120 and Route 236 to give fire crews from four departments a chance to beat back the flames.

The road has since reopened.
