Rutland School Board agrees to ‘Rutland’ for new mascot
RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) - After nearly three years of deliberation and in-fighting that divided the community, The Rutland School Board Tuesday voted unanimously to change the school mascot to “Rutland.”
This comes after some pushed to get rid of the “Raiders” name because of too many racial connotations.
In a student survey, 43% voted in favor of keeping it as just “Rutland” over “Raptors” or “Ravens.” Everyone in attendance at Tuesday’s school board meeting agreed that the matter needs to be resolved once and for all.
“I think there are a significant number of students that really want to be done with this conversation and they just want it to stop. They want the adults to stop talking about it. ‘Please be done. Figure that out,’” said Rutland High School Principal Greg Schillinger.
The school hopes to have the final mascot imagery sorted out by June.
