BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday sharply limited the federal government’s authority to police water pollution into certain wetlands, setting up the possibility that states will need to step in and fill the void.

By a 5-4 vote, the conservative majority boosted property rights over concerns about clean water in a ruling in favor of an Idaho couple who sought to build a house in a boggy area.

Darren Perron spoke with Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner John Beling about the ruling’s impact when it comes to protecting waterways and wetlands in Green Mountain State.
