Galen Ettlin is an award-winning journalist, joining WCAX as an Anchor/Reporter at 5:30 and 11 p.m.
His work is nationally recognized, with his series "The Abolitionists Face the Love Army" earning a 2018 GLAAD Media Award nomination for Excellence in TV Journalism. He was the only local journalist nominated alongside the national networks.
Galen most recently was an Anchor/Producer/Reporter in Tri-Cities, Washington. His work covering hate speech against LGBTQ youth at schools earned him a first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
This Portland, Oregon, native is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese. In 2010, he attended Middlebury College's summer intensive language program, then went on to earn double degrees in broadcast journalism and Chinese language at the University of Oregon.
He has traveled the world, assisting production and becoming a reality show cast member at LeTV in Beijing.
But when Galen's not in the field or in the TV studio, he's making music. One of his favorite stories in the Pacific Northwest took him behind the scenes of the 2017 American Idol auditions, where he took the stage to audition for the show's producers. He has also volunteered as a judge and emcee for the Portland Teen Idol singing competition, and enjoys recording Chinese cover songs.
