BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) As part of Clean Water Week visitors at ECHO Leahy Center in Burlington Tuesday learned simple steps to keep the lake and other waterways clean.
Pet owners should always clean up after dogs since the waste can get into runoff.
Homeowners can also make rain gardens at the lowest point in the yard to keep rainwater from running into the street and collecting pollutants.
And anyone can get involved helping collect water samples with the local Stream Team in Chittenden County.
"We've been good on a state and national level at identifying point source pollution -- where you can point to a factory and say, 'oh, they are obviously creating a source of pollution.' So now I think the challenge for us is -- as a community and as a state -- is to address that nonpoint source pollution, or the pollution that is spread out over hundreds or thousands of people," said Kristen Balschunat, the Stream Team coordinator.
