More than 1 million gallons of sewage and stormwater was released into a St. Albans stream Thursday.

The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation says the discharge was caused by a pump malfunction and was authorized in order to prevent overflows and stop backups into businesses and homes.

The wastewater was released into Stevens Brook, which feeds into Lake Champlain.
