The 65-foot harbor tugs Hawser and Line will augment efforts of the Burlington Coast Guard station, which patrols the 490 square miles of the lake in Vermont and New York reaching the Canadian border.
The Coast Guard's Northern New England commander, Capt. Brian LeFebvre, says the seasonal uptick in boating traffic on the lake presents unique challenges to enforcing federal law and ensuring boating safety.
Both cutters will be reaching Lake Champlain via the Hudson River and the New York State Canal System.
The diesel-powered, steel-hulled, single-propeller vessels and their six-person crews are capable of performing a variety of missions.
