Young chefs test their cooking skills

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. Young Chefs tested their skills at the Champlain Valley Expo, Saturday.

About 300 hundred middle and high school students from all over the state participated in the Jr. Iron Chef Competition. Teams had 90 minuets to prepare a meal that they would want to eat at school.

The goal was to have students create a healthy dish that everyone would enjoy.

"It's so cool to see everyone and I'm so honored to be able to have won the local competition comfy here and represent my school," said Jessie Lazelle, from Twin Valley High School.

"It was a lot of fun I was a lot less nervous than I thought it would be. At the beginning you feel like really anxious to get started, but once you are going you don't even realize you're being watched," said Lindsay Bernard and Nichole Trahan, from St. Albans City Middle School.

The winners will have the opportunity to prepare their recipes for legislators at the Vermont Statehouse next month.
