BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Just minutes after the polls closed in Vermont, there was already a winner.
The Associated Press declared Bernie Sanders the winner of his U.S. Senate race in Vermont.
This will be Sanders third term as a U.S. senator.
"Our job is to tell this president that we will not tolerate his policies-- that all over this country, led by the state of Vermont, we are going to stand up and fight back," said Sanders, I-Vermont.
Sanders beats Republican candidate Lawrence Zupan of Manchester, along with seven other candidates.
"Tonight, my friends, I do not have the honor of being your senator-elect," Zupan told supporters. "My head is unbowed. Knowing I have performed my mission to declare that what has been so obvious to me, even as it was being denigrated by Bernie Sanders."
