A bill aimed at overhauling Vermont's land use law known as Act 250 will not be voted on this year.

Vermont Public Radio reports that the debate over the law brought up difficult issues about environmental protection and land use that are still unsolved.

Act 250 has governed larger development in Vermont for nearly 50 years, with a list of 10 criteria for developments.

The administration of Republican Gov. Phil Scott and legislative leader had both made the Act 250 update a top priority this session.

The delay is discouraging for the business community and environmentalists.

Rep. Amy Sheldon, chairwoman of the House committee that has worked on a bill since January, said they are hoping to move the legislation early next session.
