Americans urged to order out on 'Great American Takeout Day'

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) Restaurants around the country are teaming up to get Americans to eat out on Tuesday which has been named "Great American Take Out Day."

Thanks to the coronavirus, that's how restaurants are staying open-- takeout and pickup only.

Riley's Fish Shack in St. Johnsbury was cranking out meals during its lunch rush.

They say normally their dining room is full, but since all Vermont restaurants are under a delivery or pickup only order from the state, they say they've seen a jump in takeout orders.

They say it hasn't been easy adjusting to the new normal, but community support is strong.

"I mean, some days we are brought to tears by people dropping off donations, people are buying gift cards, local business buying for the entire office, so we will get 10 or eight on a slip. People have said we don't want you to go, we are happy you are in town and we are going to make you stay," said Riley Rutchuck of Riley's Fish Shack.

The snack shack has also started offering free meals to truckers on the road. They say it's a way to give back to the people who help keep them going.
