BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) The Bennington select board has picked the International Association of Police Chiefs to review the local police department's procedures and practices.
Earlier this year, Attorney General T.J. Donovan recommended the review following criticism of the department's response to reports of racial harassment of a black state lawmaker.
Former Democratic State Rep. Kiah Morris resigned last year after receiving what she said were online and other racial threats. After an investigation by state police, Donovan said Morris was a victim of racial harassment but said there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone.
The Bennington police chief has denied that his department failed to thoroughly investigate the case.
The Bennington Banner reports that the board has approved spending $66,000 for the audit review.
