Birchwood Terrace reports COVID-positive residents recovering
Officials at a Burlington nursing home with nearly 50 COVID-19 positive cases say that despite two additional deaths over the weekend, many of the sick residents are now on the road to recovery.
A Birchwood Terrace spokesperson says that most residents sick with coronavirus have graduated to the next, less serious step in care. And all staff members are either back to work or able to return. That's after 26 employees tested positive.
Overall, 49 Birchwood residents have tested positive and nine have died. Vermont health officials last week said it remains the largest outbreak at a Vermont senior facility.
Federal officials said Monday they plan to start tracking and publicly sharing information on infections and deaths in such facilities to help spot trends and early signs the virus is spreading in communities. The move comes as critics, industry officials and local leaders have called for more aggressive actions by the federal government to track infections in homes and contain outbreaks by helping them get greater access to testing and masks, especially given the vulnerability of elderly residents.
