BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) The water main break on Pine Street has been repaired and the southbound roadway is now open to drivers.
It's still unclear why the pipe broke but the Public Works Department is looking into potential causes.
The original call came in around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Crews had it fixed in about 12 hours.
The biggest concern was the fact that the pipe was not an older generation water main, it was just installed in the past decade.
"Unfortunately, it was a more recent-era pipe. So this pipe was, is not a pipe that we recently worked on, it was one that was installed or replaced in 2010. And so we're looking into whether or not it was possibly a pipe material defect and/or possibly an installation issue," said Megan Moir of Burlington Public Works.
Construction crews paved over the hole where the broken water main was located.
Public Works was unsure how many homes were affected but they said most of them are back to normal water pressure.
