Burlington churches merge

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A key property in downtown Burlington may be one step closer to going up for sale.

Parishioners met with leaders of the Catholic Church to discuss a merger between the Cathedral of Saint Joseph and the Immaculate Conception Church.

The diocese got permission to demote the Immaculate Conception from a cathedral to a church a couple weeks back. The two churches have merged. But Monsignor John McDermott of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington says it may be a while before the property hits the market.

"Unfortunately, people think it has to happen now or it's going to happen... There's a process, and the church requires we follow a process to make sure that we hear everybody who needs to be heard," McDermott said.

He says the possible sale has been on people's minds for years, so parishioners understand the likelihood of it going through.

The process could take several months.
