Burlington armed standoff ends in arrest

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A Burlington man faces aggravated assault charges following an armed standoff with police Monday night.

William McDonald

Burlington police say they got a call from a woman around 10:45 p.m. Monday saying she had been assaulted, bitten, choked and thrown down stairs at an apartment complex on Ethan Allen Parkway. She also told police she was several months pregnant.

When police arrived, the woman said that William McDonald, 37, had locked himself in his apartment with a loaded shotgun. Police say because it is a densely populated area, they brought out their Emergency Response Vehicle and used a robotic vehicle and negotiator to end the standoff peacefully around 1 a.m.

McDonald was charged with aggravated assault. He's due in court Tuesday.
