Canadian lawmaker calls for probe into landfill expansion

A Canadian lawmaker has called for an investigation into the impact of a planned landfill expansion.
The Caledonian-Record reports Parliament member Denis Paradis said Wednesday that he would push the U.S. and Canada to request "an urgent investigation" from the International Joint Commission. The commission is an international panel that monitors the U.S.-Canada border.
Casella Waste Management is planning a 51-acre expansion at its Coventry landfill. The company says the expansion will provide an additional 25 years of use.
Critics have said they're worried the expansion will affect Lake Memphremagog, which is the source of drinking water for many communities.
Paradis said in a statement the expansion's potential impacts "are of grave concern to Canadian authorities and residents in Quebec." According to Paradis, boundary waters are protected.
