Captain Kirk takes the helm in Ticonderoga

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. Excited fans flocked to Ticonderoga, N.Y. Saturday to meet William Shatner, Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek. Channel 3 reporter, and Star Trek fan, Cat Viglienzoni was there too.

Of all the Star Trek fans here at Ticonderoga's set you will only find one quite like Julian Meyers. And this six-year-old knows EXACTLY who he's here to see.

"Who's your favorite character?"
"Captain Kirk!", answers Julian.

And Captain Kirk was here to meet him... and hundreds of other fans. This is the 87-year-old actor's second visit to this set. He says he was astounded by how realistic it is.

"These sets were made to order. They're done exactly the way these sets were made. In fact, they're coming apart in exactly the same way our sets came apart," said William Shatner, "Captain Kirk".

James Cawley is the man behind the vision of the set.

"You're building this thing from scratch, why?"
"Well, it was a childhood love. I used to to turn that TV on in fact, we watched it on WCAX at 11 o'clock at night," said James Cawley.

Each detail here is carefully crafted either from the blueprints from the original set... or from a close eye in the episodes. Cawley says, no one has ever complained about an error.

"When Mr. Shatner came in he was like - this is it. It's like coming back to the house you grew up in," said Cawley.

And for fans, seeing the Captain in his chair was like entering the Star Trek world.

"You watch the show, you see Captain Kirk sitting in the chair and then you see him sitting in the chair in person, it's really cool," said John Cruise III, Star Trek Fan.

While Captain Kirk was the main Captain of honor at the event, there were actually two captains on the Enterprise bridge. The second one breathing new life into the Captain's chair.

Anson Mount who plays Captain Pike of the Enterprise in the upcoming season of "Star Trek: Discovery" came straight from filming episodes to greet fans.

"It's crazy. Having grown up a Star Trek fan from the time I was eight years old to suddenly I don't know feeling some kind of ownership over that chair... it's a little weird!" said Mount.

But for Julian there is only one Captain. And that's Kirk.

"What's your favorite Captain Kirk moment?"
"Khaaaaaaan! " Julian yells.

A new generation, on and off the screen, embracing the series.
