Coalition opposes mayor's BT bidder preference

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) A coalition of Burlington residents is pushing back against the mayor over Burlington Telecom.

Keep BT Local is bidding to buy Burlington Telecom. But its offer is just $12 million compared with two out-of-state companies bidding about $27 million and $30 million. Earlier this week, Mayor Miro Weinberger, D-Burlington, tried to get ahead of the debate by announcing his support for the out-of-state companies.

The mayor says the Keep BT Local bid is not viable, in part, because it is so low. He's been told it could lead to a lawsuit by taxpayers or Citibank, which is still owed millions following years of BT financial woes.
