Colchester Causeway, bike ferry set to reopen after storm damage
The Lake Champlain Bike Ferry is set to reopen Saturday following major damage that closed the Colchester Causeway bike path back in May.
Governor Phil Scott attended a ribbon cutting Friday afternoon with other local and state officials and businesses. Officials initially believed damage would close the bike path and ferry for the summer season, but VTrans helped put the repairs on the fast track to reopen the tourist hot spot.
"Getting this causeway open in time for summer biking season was important to me, and many others, because we knew how important it was for the community to not lose out on the economic benefit that brings people here during the summer," Scott said.
The estimated half-a-million dollars in damage to the trail is part of a federal disaster relief package submitted by the state last week.
Local Motion says there were more than 16,000 rides on the Colchester to South Hero bike ferry last year.
