Construction underway on new Burlington YMCA facility
Construction is underway for the new YMCA in Burlington, just 150 steps from the current location on College Street.
YMCA officials joked Thursday was a "ground-broke" ceremony because work at the site began last month. Crews have already started excavating.
The total cost of the project is about $28 million. When it's finished, the 50,000-square-foot YMCA will have a new gym, two pools, a track and will be handicapped accessible. The new building will also allow the Y day care to take 50 more children.
"The celebration, though, is not about concrete and steel. It is about the way in which this building is going to help the Y to advance its mission," said Lisa Ventriss of the YMCA.
"As someone who has seen how hard our, how challenged our early child system is and how great the need is for additional high-quality slots, it is extraordinarily great to know that we are now on our way see 50 new slots," said Mayor Miro Weinberger, D-Burlington.
Within the next few months, Pomerleau Real Estate is expected to announce what it will do with the old YMCA building once the new one is finished in early 2020.
