CLEVELAND, Ohio (WCAX) - You can say August Backman had all of his basses covered Saturday.
The 10-year-old from Waterbury won the national championship in the 9-10 age group at the Pitch, Hit and Run competition during Major League Baseball All-Star Weekend.
Backman was one of 44 kids from the U.S. and Canada to participate. He became the first Vermonter to go to the competition after battling through four levels of competition and thousands of other ballplayers. One of those competitions was at Fenway Park in Boston.
Points were awarded for speed on basses and accuracy both on the mound and in the batter's box. August blasted a homerun during the hitting event to capture the championship.
