Essex Shoppes, Cinema going solar

ESSEX, Vt. (WCAX) The Essex Shoppes and Cinema are going solar.

Monday, they went live with solar power at the theater.

Right now, just the movie theater and one building have solar panels on top. But there are plans to add solar to another building, as well. It will cost more than $1 million but owner Peter Edelmann says they expect to make back the cost of the installation in the next 5-10 years.

"Going solar really makes the statement that we're looking to the future and the idea here is to really have something that makes sense for the state of Vermont and is symbolic of what we feature ourselves to be," Edelmann said.

More changes are also on the way for the space, including upgrading buildings, changing the roads and putting in a larger public green.

Edelmann says more people are interested in the space but they will also be losing some tenants in the future, too.
