BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Experts are allaying fears that Burlington's fireworks killed hundreds of fish.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife sent us a photo of what some say look like a lot of tiny dead fish floating in Lake Champlain at Oakledge Park, not far from the Burlington Waterfront.

In reality, biologists say these are the empty cases of hexagenia, or giant mayflies. When the insects leave the water, they shed what you see. The hatches of giant mayflies are very large and generally occur this time of year.
