ESSEX, Vt. (WCAX) Thousands of Vermonters are heading to theaters this weekend to see "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

Many fans left Essex Cinemas with big smiles on their faces after seeing the film Thursday. "Disney took a very good classic and made it into a great family episode," said James Bordeaux of Duxbury.

"Visually, it was really awesome," said Andy Purdy of Benson. "There were so many good parts."

This theater sold more than 1,200 tickets for Thursday’s showings of Episode VIII. Vermonters started lining up at 11 a.m. to make sure they got a good seat. Orleans resident Chris Hardy ordered his ticket online weeks in advance. "Been a Star Wars fan since I was 8 years old, so for 40 years I’ve been loving Star Wars," said Hardy. "Big part of my life."

Many fans dressed up as characters for the premiere, including Lara Keenan from Essex. "We love dressing up and spreading love of this movie that’s influenced our lives and inspired us," said Keenan.

Aedan Lahiff from Jericho is excited to see some familiar faces on the screen and to meet some new characters too. "This is going to bring back like Luke Skywalker and someone new," said Lahiff. "When they bring in new characters, it gives a new insight on what could happen."

Essex Cinemas theater staff say they are prepared for hundreds of more fans to come. They tell us they have 14 Star Wars showings a day for the next week.
