First responders served free breakfast in Milton

MILTON, Vt. (WCAX) Vermonters continue commemorating Sept. 11 this weekend by giving back to first responders with free food.

On Sunday, Milton's Arrowhead Senior Center hosted a breakfast buffet for EMTs, firefighters, police and veterans. More than 100 first responders and their families attended the community feast.

Organizers say they put on the event in honor of 9/11, but some had an even more personal connection to the cause.

"We have family that have been sick. My daughter was born with some issues and my grandson. I almost lost my husband a month ago from choking, and they've been amazing, right there to help us through all this," organizer Elizabeth Whitney said.

"This group has been working with us for years on our bingo for the town. They raise a lot of money for our association and really keep us going so we can do events throughout the community throughout the year. It's just incredible the time they put in," Milton Fire Chief Chris Porier said.

The Milton Fire Department says the group of residents has helped raise thousands of dollars for the organization over the last few years.
