BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Friendly's is closing restaurants in Bennington and Rutland as part of ongoing struggles the chain has faced since it emerged from bankruptcy six years ago.
The Bennington Banner reports after 46 years in business the local restaurant served its last meal Sunday. Friendly's officials confirmed the closure of the Bennington and Rutland locations calling them a "normal part of business as a result of lease situations or too many locations in one trade area."
Friendly’s, which was started by two teen-aged brothers in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1935, has been facing stiff competition and changing tastes for years. Other closures were reported throughout New England area -- including Springfield -- bringing the total amount of locations to around 230.
The chain has made other rounds of closures in 2014.
