NORTHFIELD, Vt. (WCAX) A monument honoring Vermont's war dead was dedicated Friday.

Gov. Phil Scott, members of the Vermont National Guard and other officials unveiled the Hershel "Woody" Williams Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. It's on the campus at Norwich University in Northfield.

The governor says it's important to honor military members who made the ultimate sacrifice and every veteran every day.

"It gives a place of solitude for those who want to reflect, remember and never forget the sacrifices made by so many," said Gov. Phil Scott, R-Vermont.

"It's comforting and gives us Gold Star families a lot of affirmation because we live every day with our loss 15 and we know the personal cost of freedom in our country," said Vicki Strong, a Gold Star Mother.

Strong lost her son, U.S. Marine Sgt. Jessie Strong, in Iraq back in 2005. He was 24. She hopes this memorial will remind people not to take his sacrifice for granted.
